Calitzdorp Dream Newsletter 3:

On Wednesday 27 June 2012 the dream team gathered at Spekboom Cottages to discuss the launch of Calitzdorp’s Dream Project which will take place on 1 September 2012.

Moira thanks James for the use of Spekboom Cottages also for the tea and coffee provided. Ockie and Hennie, Marinda, Marlene and Penny are also thanked for the lovely snacks they brought.

The aim of the launch is to introduce the Dream Project to the community. The launch will kick off with a march which will start at the Bergsig turn off opposite the garbage dump. The SAP, fire brigade, emergency services, ACVV, schools, drummies and brass band amongst others will be asked to lead the march. The rest of us will follow with banners with slogans taken out of the blue print. As we walk we will pick up all the litter in the streets to show that we are willing to keep the environment clean. Everyone will walk down together to the square next to the new supermarket in Voortrekker Street where an official ribbon cutting will take place. A banner will also be put up beforehand in the main street to raise awareness amongst passing motorists.

Stalls will be put up between the DR Church and the church hall. The one group of stalls will consist of organisations to make the public aware of what their aim and services are, e.g. CANSA, ACVV, SAP, emergency services, municipality, library, Police forum, fire brigade, Vygieshof, Hope Options Centre, Clinic (ask for free blood tests), e.g. Organisations will be contacted beforehand.

The other group of stalls will mostly sell food. People that want stalls must please contact Moira (044) 2133 402 or the Tourism office (044) 2133 775 well in advance to ensure that everyone does not sell the same products. The following suggestions for stalls have been made and there are many available (the suggestions without a name are still available):


hotdogs made with “roosterkoek” (Calitzdorp Tourism & Mrs Williams); pancake (CANSA - Juanita)
Jams and preserves; Olives (Nita Bailey); Cake and eats (Ann Upman); White elephant table (Vygieshof); Soup and bread; Curry & rice; Vetkoek & mince; Beverages; Other

In the church hall the artists will exhibit and Kevin will be asked to exhibit plants and trees from his nursery outside the church hall.

Contributions from the community for launch of Dream Project:
CANSA plans a walk through the town for the launch.
Ask SAP to hold a road block at one of the town entrances. Pamphlets can also be handed out there by school children to inform tourists about the happenings.
The bin art project will also be held that day on the square in front of the new supermarket. Petrosa have donated 30 bins for this project – thanks to them!
The results of the cuttings competition will also be announced. The class with the most cuttings will be rewarded.
Juanita Pretorius will provide T-shirts for the children on street to wear when they help cleaning the streets. They will be rewarded with nice food afterwards.
Mr Upman asks that the SAP must get more involved in the problem of drinking in the streets, especially during all pay days. Apparently there is a municipal ordinance where R100 fines are issued to people using alcohol on street. Officials have been trained already. Follow up with Jessica at Kannaland Municipality.
Mrs Kriek asks that traffic department must be asked in writing to look at vehicles which speed in Voortrekker Street.
SAP vehicles racing carelessly in the streets are also a problem; Marinda says she was almost run over in front of her business.
Marlene suggests that we hand over the prize (cell phone) for the wine vat care – competition in Voortrekker Street. Marlene will contact Briëtte in this regard since she started it.

More feedback from community about projects in town:
De Krans will take responsibility themselves for the Gamka West road from the turn at the station’s entrance up to just before the bridge – pick up litter, keep it clean on a regular basis. They are also planning a project at the houses of their employees (at the old airfield) to remove the garbage and then keep it clean.
Mr. Bob Reinecke offered to repair the street name boards and put them back up.
Anna Sophia’s for the donation of the cement for the repairs at the AFM church.
Zelma and Esbé’s group contacted the Lutheran Church in Canada for funds to, among other things, get a fence, bench outside and paint, also want to put up a cross on the building and make the garden beautiful. They are very excited! This group also has a lot of good ideas with the entrances of the town.
Ockie Calitz’s team who will contact the family of the people buried in the old cemetery to request funds for the maintenance of the cemetery.
Retief opened a facebook page for the project which has been visited alot already. It is important to get comments on the project. Tell all your friends to join Dream 4 Calitzdorp on Facebook.
Ockie and Hennie can get trees for a very good price to plant at the cemetery, they will let us know.
Suzette Pokpas’s team currently have already picked up almost 100 black bags full of litter/garbage against the banks at the entrance of Bergsig. Mrs Barry provided the team with soup. Mr Mitchell from Bergsig wants to do the recycling hereof.
Dorpshuis have possibly got a donkey cart and 2 donkeys for Charlton’s donkey-route project. Louis from Soeterus will donate 50 bales of feed for the donkeys.
Ask oom Manie to do something at the AFMChurch in Voortrekker Street.
Ann will find out who the wall belongs to in Andries Pretorius Street just before the school’s entrance. A garden can be made there and good graffiti about the dream project can be painted on the wall.
A garden competition can be held, each one in town has the opportunity to enter his garden. Look at the beautiful Bougainvilleas opposite Anna Sophia’s.
Mr Frey has also restored his house beautifully, ask to take pictures.
Cheryl and Ann plan to visit Calitzdorp High to promote the arts-bin-competition, also to follow up on the cuttings competition.
Sean Nagel donated pasta, cool drink, etc. from a sponsor to help with the handing out of soup in Bergsig as well as the “tip”. Thank you Sean!
Bertus made us 15 wire 'sticks' and delivered it to Moira for us to pick up the litter in town when we are ready. He will make more if we need more.
Anita and Carel van der Merwe planted herbs in old tires which they have painted already to beautify their garden. Anita will send us photos.
TTT wine cellars’ garden also looks very nice on the corner opposite Gila.

About the building : Die Handelshuis building is dated late 1800's and was the corner cafe /general dealer for the old town center. The first 2 years were spent restoring the inside of the building - sanding the original Oregon floors slightly to not destroy their beauty and stripping interior wooden pillars, window frames and doors of about 9 layers of previous years paint work. We renovated the building into a Coffee Shop with a blend of antique and retro, exuding comfort and charm of a bygone age. We rebuilt shop counters and shelves, filling them with preserves and jams of local fruits. We also serve light meals, home baked cakes and good coffee, making your trip to Calitzdorp well worth it.  Tracy and Peter of the Handelshuis in Queen Street.

The Gallery was originally a trading store run by Mr Katz. I believe at one stage it was also a tattersall. When we bought the property it was an antique shop run by Mrs du Plessis. We saw the potential of turning it into a gallery and so the renovations began. We removed the origan ceiling panels which had been quite damaged by leaks in the roof and sanded them down to remove all the dark varnish and revealed the beautiful origan pine. When we replaced the boards we left the beams exposed which has created a lovely feature. The original floor boards had been replaced by pine sometime previously and these we sanded down and varnished with an origan stain. The back storage space had an earth floor which we tiled and turned the space into a small living area which is where I lived for the time it took to build my home. The existing windows in that area showed quite clearly the thickness of the walls and had bars reminiscent of a jail to presumably keep stock safe. Shutters were used in place of glass and this we left as it was. Wooden tree trunks were used as lintels! There was much debate as to whether we should replace the pipes used to support roof of the veranda with thick wooden posts as there was evidence that they once existed, but decided to leave the pipes as they had been in place for some time. The veranda which was cemented we extended to the boundary and erected a low wall to help define the space and give us a larger space. It was a wonderful experience to give the tired old building its pride back and to see the reaction of visitors to the gallery to the beautiful space that has been created.    Penny Rudder - Gallery Route 62.
