Calitzdorp Dream Newsletter 2:

Calitzdorp had its second successful Dream project meeting on 13 June 2012.  Mrs. Strauss welcomed everyone and explained again shortly for the sake of new interested parties that we following a model formed by Theuns Coetzee from Bonnievale to get people from the communities involved to beautify the town and that a result thereof will be that the secondary problems will automatically be addressed.

The purpose of the second meeting was to identify the problem areas in town, what is needed to resolve the problem, what each person can offer and how people can join in different projects.

Everyone is asked to please contact Erina as soon as possible to give deadlines for the completion of their projects. Please contact Erina for before and after photos as well if you do not have access to a camera, we want to place it in our news letters to encourage others. 

An awareness day is being planned. Posters and a banner will be put up in town beforehand to inform people that the dream project is in the making and that we are a “slow town”. The awareness day will be held on a day that there are a lot of people in town. We will walk around with black garbage bags and pick up litter and talk to the people to motivate them to get involved with the project. We aim to raise awareness amongst the public that a clean town starts with an individual. 

A meeting must be organised beforehand for this day and we ask everyone to please email Erina with ideas before Friday 22 June 2012. The event will be placed in the local news paper soon.

PROJECTS IDENTIFIED DURING THE SECOND MEETING:

• Blackie and Kim join the cemetery project with Ockie and Hennie.
• Planting of garden in front of the entrance of the public toilets – Penny Rudder and businesses next to the toilets.
• Entrances to the town needs attention:

East entrance (from Oudtshoorn):      Put up a Kiosk (Tourism); Zelma & group; Ask municipality take down the old Calitzdorp board

West entrance (from Ladismith):        Ask Klaus Triebe and municipality to get involved

• Recycling project 1 - Suzette Pokpas and Sunday school class are going to pick up litter in Bergsig this coming school holidays. Plastic, tin and glass will be separated. Sam Duiker and school children will help her. Briëtte Barry will give the children soup in return for the litter. Moira and Jadé will keep the soup warm and serve it to the children.
• Recycling project 2 – Sheldon Sneygans.  Sheldon has been given a space in town where glass, tin and plastic waste can be stored. Suzette Pokpas and Sam Duiker can link their project with Sheldon’s.
• Street names – signs lying on the ground and must be put up. All the streets do not have signs. This project needs an owner.
• Public garden in Bergsig – Deon Samson from Welgevonden Guest Farm previously worked at a landscaping architect. Deon will ask Aubrey, a child on the street, to help him with this project.
• Teach school children to make cuttings (Excelsior en Gamka) – Deon Samson.  Moira and Retief will take Deon to the schools.
• Children living at the rubbish dumps – ACVV, clinic, tourism, Cheryl De Villiers.  Project identified for womens day. Want to convert the building on the terrain, where 3 poor families live, into a home.
• Child on street – ACVV together with SASSA will contact the parents of the children on street and plans to take away their grant if they do not look after their children. (children must go to school and be looked after, the government gives the grant). Posters and pamphlets will also be given out to the public and put up everywhere in businesses to encourage people not to give money or food to children on the street, because that will keep them on street. They are much worse off on street then at home. All the names of the children on street on the ACVV’s list have parents or guardians that do receive money to look after them. There are other options available if the children do not have parents.
• Remove all the old “kunstekronkel” signs in town – looking for someone to do it.
• Donkey car project – Charlton Ewerts, registered tour guide. Tourism is helping Charlton find donkeys and a donkey car in order for him to do the routes in town. Mr Wilkonson can be asked to give attention to the donkey cars for it to be in good condition. Charlton is aiming for job creation, by presenting a township tour among others and take tourist to Bergsig for divine traditional meals.
• Bins are needed in Bergsig. PetroSA volunteered to sponsor bins to Calitzdorp. Municipality must be asked to clean them.
• Gamka lookout point is neglected – Hennie, Ockie, Deon and team. Trees, plants, bin, etc is needed. It is a town entrance. Calitzdorp Cellar can also be asked for help since they are right next to it.
• Prizes for bin arts project – municipality provided funds. Penny Rudder and Marinda Combrinck involved in the judging. Other artists will also be approached. Maritza from Seeff also wants to be involved here. Cheryl will compile a committee; announce a date for the arts competition and introduction of the bins. Cheryl will take the list of subjects that can be painted on the bins to the schools. Children will first paint on paper and the judges will decide which pictures must be painted on the bins.
• Clean the streets during all pay and tell people why they are doing it – Ockie Calitz, Esbé and Moira.
• Parking area behind post office – Marlene Robson with Johan Fourie. Will also join the public toilets team.
• Beautify Kardoes’ stoep and the logs opposite Marlene’s shop with planted wine vats – Marlene Robson.
• DR church hall, area in front of the post office – phone Marinda at the church offices and ask if they can do something to beautify that area.
• Make cuttings and plant in tyres at the “AGS” church in Bergsig – Lezelia at ACVV.
